GRADE 8 SERVICE

My group this year consisted of Shawn, Malika and I. In grade 8 we aimed to write a children's book in collaboration with Khadija primary school in Nyali , to do this we had to interact with each, understand our different perspectives and learn from each other. To build this partnership we had to bond with each other and to do this we went to the school and build session plans and interact with the students on the images on the left the pictures and a sample session plan can be seen. The sessions were aimed and teaching english to the students from Khadija primary school so that we could build better relationships with them as we would be able to share our ideas. Through the interactions we developed various techniques ad teaching strategies we could use to build their understanding of the language. I was able to learn that there are different types of learners including visual learning, auditory learners, and kinaesthetic learners.

 

Skills I learnt from this process are :

1) Social and communication skills: 

I learnt social skills as not only did I have to interact with the people in my group to build sessions but I also had to interact with the community and group of kids we worked with as Khadija primary school.  I had to get out of my comfort zone which was quite difficult for me as I am a more introverted person. In addition i also had to improve my communication skills this was as kids at the school spoke in swahili where as I spoke english because of this language barrier I struggled a lot at first. but I learned even though we had a language barrier we were often able to find things to relate to and hence build bonds.

2) Learning and teaching skills: 

During the process of teaching the kids english and interacting with them I also learned a few very important skills, by learning how to teach I was further also able to learn how to earn> This is as not only did I discovered strategies that would enhance not only the learning of the students but also strategies that could me learn better. For example when i learned how everyone was a different type of learner, i also learnt what type of learner I was. This helped me not only adapt the session plans but also adapt m y learning system in class and further improved my education process.
