EXTRACURRICULARS

These are the Activities I have taken part in aside from school, this includes enrichments and actives I continue to develop my passion in.

For The Menstruator

Positions Held:  Member of the educational Workshop

Skills Developed: For the Menstruator (FTM) is an organization that works towards eliminating period poverty and the stigma that is around the topic. After being a part of FTM, I have been able to help women who don't have adequate access to menstrual hygiene and raise awareness of this cause. I joined FTM last year and it has been one of the greatest experiences as I have been able to learn so much. During the pandemic we were able to continue our journey through breaking period stigma through online platforms such as instagram and TikTok. However before the pandemic, I would often work on community circles, go to different areas to educate both girls and boys on period poverty, the aim of our project, and sanitation through session plans and working with an amazing team that would help me learn more. FTM has helped me develop public speaking skills as we have a lot of interaction with different groups of people. For example, once I went to a school three hours away from ours and conducted an educational session with my team. I had to speak to around 1000 students whom I had never seen before. I have never spoken in front of so many people that I didn't know, and FTM helped me get out of my comfort zone, and learn public speaking skills. In FTM, I was also in an educational workshop where I first learned teaching. I would enjoy making session plans and interacting with many people to make them aware of a very important issue.

Model United Nations (MUN)

Hours Per Week: 1-2 hours a week

Skills Developed: Through MUN first of all I have developed my confidence, MUN has taught me how to improve my public speaking skills as we are often required to speak and take initiative for the causes we care for. Not only that MUN has also helped me improve my writing skills through resolution writing which require formal and succinct language. Other than  this MUN had given me a platform to learn more about global concerns as well as politics and policies of different communities and countries. MUN has been a driving force in fuelling my passion in creating differences to help communities and learning more about global politics and current affairs.

I have been in MUN for 3 years, and have had the opportunity to be part of the Nairobi Model United conference, Aga Khan Academy Annual Conference as well as the Oshawal Model United Nations conference. All these conferences have helped me further develop public speaking and confidence skills, as I have had to speak and debate with people I have never seen or known before, I have won accolades like best delegation, best resolution and honourable mention in my time in MUN.

TUCK SHOP

Tuck shop is another activity I have spent a lot of time participating in. I joined Tuck shop in grade 10. In Tuck shop I partake in at-least 2 shifts per week.

Skills Developed: Through tuck shop I have been able to develop key communication skills, this is I have had the opportunity to learn how to communicate with customers as well as my team.I often have to persuade customers helping me learn marketing. I often also have to learn how I can manage to participate in tuck shop shifts while also managing the workload of grade 10, this has taught me time management and self organization skills. Lastly as tuck-shop I work as a sales rep, so when something is sold I have to calculate the cost, calculate change, and inform the cashier, this has helped me further develop my mathematical skills.

Residential life

In grade 8, I had the opportunity to join Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, I am from Pakistan so naturally I had to join the residential program in our school. When I first came in grade 8 I experienced many challenges such as struggling to fit in, missing my family and of course missing home food. During this time not only did my body have to learn to adapt to the humid Mombasa whether but also I had to learn how I could adapt to the new system I found myself in.

First of all I learned social skills, this is as the residential program forced me to be out of my comfort zone and to cope with that I had to create lasting relations that could give me guidance and company.

Other than this I also learned self management skills, because I was so far away from my parents, for the first time I had to learn the best way to manage my studies, my service, my health and my daily exercise. This forced me to schedule my time and create time for the things that really mattered.

BEING A MASTER OF CEREMONIES FOR TALENT NIGHT:

Lastly I also learned public speaking and confidence skills, this is as through the residential program I was able to take part in activities that required me to build such life skills. in grade 8 I participate in cultural night as a narrator for our residential dorm performance, where as in grade 10 I was an MC for the talent night even as well as a dancer in our residential dorm performance. This clearly shows the gradual increase in confidence and public speaking skills through the residential program.

Through being a master of ceremonies for our talent night event I was able to really get out of my comfort zone as I had to to guide the whole program for the night. This required a lot of confidence as I had to speak in front of a large sum of students without stuttering or messing up the words. I also had to lear to project my voice and engage the audience.

Being a Master of Ceremonies  for Holiday Concert

During our holiday concert I had the opportunity to be an MC for the school holiday concert. This opportunity really put me out of my comfort zone as I had to to present in front of not only students but also parents, as well as many teachers. To do this I learned the best way to be engaging, this was through adding jokes and rhetorical questions to the script as well as always projecting my voice to engage the audience. I also had to be confident in order to present my ideas and the performers. Overall the experience taught me how to be an engaging and confident on stage.

The MYP Mathletics

On pie day the MYP mathletics event occurred where we celebrate maths and sports together. I was able to participate in this sport as a grade 10 representative, after solving a series of questions I had to run to final base with my team to win. Overall the experience taught me how to solve mathematical questions quickly and also allowed me to communicate and interact with other members in the same house. i was able to meet a verity of new people and work with them.

Global Encounters

In July 2021 I had the opportunity of being part of global camp called Global Encounters, this camp gave me an opportunity to connect with thousands of students across the global during the pandemic. Normally Global Encounters in a camp that occurs physically and allows students to explore a particular country throughout the camps duration while learning about the place, the Muslim religion, and skills that can help them out throughout their life times. However midst the pandemic global encounters hosted the first online camp global encounters camp, CONNECT. I was able to be a member of this and continue to interact and learn from the comfort and safety of my home. In CONNECT I joined the entrepreneurship and technology workshop which taught me how I build solutions to help my community. I was also able to learn more about the Muslim history and values, helping me strengthen my religious understanding. To be a member of this camp I had to go through a rigorous application process where I listed my passions, and experiences. Overall this experience inspired me to increase my knowledge on the Muslim religion while also inspiring me to make a different/ change in my community.

WASHPAP

In September of 2019, I had the wonderful opportunity of participating in the WASHPAP conference. The WASHPAP conference was a 2 day zoom platform where we were able to edit and give feedback on a UN resolution focussed on the UN's sustainable development goals   the summit allowed me to explore the UN sustainable development goals, and I was able to give feedback to and edit a resolution touched by 100s of students world wide based on achieving the Sustainable development goals. It was a great experience to learn how a resolution is written, increase knowledge on sanitation in the world and poverty elimination, and connect with many others who shared the same thoughts as me and build long lasting connection.

MICROSOFT-MEDITECHX ART FEST

In August 2020 (during grade 8) I participated in MediTechx Art fest. This gave the opportunity to create an art piece that told a story, my art piece seen on the right talked about how women are trapped because of period poverty like we are by COVID-19.

Yearbook

In the duration of grade 8 I was a member of the yearbook team and the school journal. This gave me an opportunity to explore my passion of reporting as I got to write many articles and write ups for the journal as well as the yearbook. I also got the opportunity to build friendships with those who share the passion with me and improve my writing & reporting skills.

Piano

Other than academics, I am passionate about music, I have been learning piano since I was 10, and am now able to play classics and compose songs. Playing piano is a way for me to destress, after a long day, or express myself through the different music I can create.

Guitar

Other than playing the piano I can also play the guitar, recently I have been able to learn how to play some of my favourite songs like tum hi ho and stand by me. Playing guitar has opened me to a new space where I can compose so many different melodies by combining the music from my guitar and piano.

PEACE SUMMIT

In grade 9 I was a part of the peace summit where various Aga Khan schools from around the world came together to discuss global concerns such as how global economies were impacted by the pandemic, and conflict resolution. We discussed how we can achieve peace in different conflicts occurring worldwide, and the main causes of global conflicts. During this, with a group consisting of Zianna, Arya, Ilham and I, we built a resource booklet for the peace summit. TO make it visually attractive we added various diagrams and aesthetic font. We also made sure all the information written was easy to understand.
