BOLLYWOOD DANCING

Started Bollywood dancing enrichment: 

With a fellow student, Iman I started a Bollywood dancing enrichment to help preserve and share the dances of my culture with others. In Aga Khan Academy Mombasa there is a huge "Desi" community, one of the ways that we communicate and express our culture is through dance. To help fellow students express their culture and creativity with a fellow student I started aa Bollywood dance enrichment. We meet for one hour at-least once a week and learn different dances to help celebrate our culture and enjoy the art together.

Performing at MADD NIGHT: 

Another one of my achievements from Bollywood dancing is that I got to perform with my enrichment group at MADD night (school talent night), this not only helped members of enrichment and I express & share our culture with others, but also helped us further increase our confidence. Overall it was a wonderful experience to perform and share our identity with our school.

ENTERTAINMENT - GRADE 9
 

 

In grade 9 due to online learning we were assigned to create a project aimed to entertain as a mentor group ( Arya, Sarina, Jamila, Manuel, Ashton, Luis, Nickolas, Safraz, and Ardasher). Our entertainment activities consisted of a compilation of skits featuring famous celebrities and relatable moments using our voice overs. Additionally, we hoped to entertain our audience using our technical, collaborative and social skills as a mentor group. We hoped that the compilation of the various skits will make the audience relate to the moments shared, share laughter amongst themselves and possibly make connections with the people featured in the skits. Lastly, we hoped to entertain our audience especially during pandemic, by creating the content which will make them happy as well as gain perspectives on the lives of other people such as the celebrities/ other individuals that will feature in our compilation. In this process, their minds will break away from the uncertainties coming from the pandemic.

We are certain that our goal was achieved because we were able to reach our wider audience across multiple platforms and entertain them. On another note, as much as the main objective of this project was teamwork, we constantly had discussions on our WhatsApp group as well as keeping an updated document, where we planned this project, brainstormed and worked together to come up with the scripts. Additionally, we worked together to promote our pages in our individual social media platforms. Moreover, by having meetings after school and using our leadership time productively, we were able to put content across 5 different social media platforms. When we completed our project, we won best project as we had the most views, reflecting how are content was very engaging to our audience.

ZAWADI BAZAAR - GRADE 10

 

In grade 10 as a mentor group we took part in leadership through Zawadi Bazaar, Zawadi Bazaar was a great opportunity for all of us to collaborate as entrepreneurs. First we were taught how we can be an entrepreneur, and key skills that are needed, such as budget management, time management, and persuasion. After keeping this in mind we decided to focus on the selling of bucket hats. 

The goal of the project is to first and foremost create a product that is desirable to the students and staff of AKAM as well as the Mombasa community by extension (something that can be used by the masses.) Bucket hats and caps are accessories that are likeable by all ages in today’s modern era.  These accessories bring a sense of fashion, belonging, and a form of expression. Through our product, we we were able to help our customers experience the aforementioned factors as well as establish positive social networking across the masses. We strongly believe that through purchasing our product, customers were  able to get on the trend present in fast fashion, which further allowed them to fit into their communities by accentuating forms of expression through fashion. To support this argument we did market research which can be seen in the slides on the left. just incase this plan did not work, we created a plan B as well. Once our project got approved we sent out a google forms to see how many people would be interested in purchasing our bucket hats, the responses can be seen on the screenshot on the left. 

To manage our finances we used a google sheets that we could all edit, that can be seen on the left. During the project I learned finance skills, as first of all we had to first invest in our project. The sum that we invested was then used to purchase the bucket hat and caps that we would customises and sell. After this we noted the orignal price of each hat or cap so we could calculate profit. Then after customisation and selling we noted the sold price, and calculate profit. TO keep track of all accounts we also arranged everything on google sheets. Other than this to place orders we used google forms, which was a great tool as it would organise the data for us very well. 
 

Other than finance skills I also learned marketing skills, this is as during the project to sell our products we needed to be persuasive. From our ordering survey we learnt that many people learned about our product from word of mouth. To persuade people to buy our product we needed to not only describe our product really well, but also show them how they would feel if they wore our product, and how it was a fashion statement. In addition we also used social media to enhance our marketing skills. This can be seen on the left on the instagram page where we created aesthetically pleasing posts to convince people to buy our product. In addition we not only modelled our product but we also posted pictures of happy customers to increase reliability. 

During this Zawadi Bazaar process our mentor group was able to earn the most money.
