MY WAY OF ESCAPE AND EXPRESSION

Hours Per Week: 1-2 hours a week

Positions Held: Student : Danced in a completion in 2017, won third place, Started Bollywood dancing enrichment with fellow student.

Skills Developed: Through dancing, I developed a thick skin. When I dance, I usually receive a lot of criticism from people, like my friends and parents. I used to get disheartened by these comments, but now I have learned that I must use these remarks as feedback and constructive criticism. Another skill I have recently developed through dancing is self-discipline. Previously, I used to always be all over the place and did not have a proper schedule. But with dancing, that is not possible. I have to dance according to the tie and movement, and I also have to schedule a time for dance practice so that I make sure that I get better. Dancing has also taught me self-confidence. Before this, I was quite a shy person who didn't like being the centre of attention and did not feel confident enough to just go in front of a bunch of people and express myself. Dancing has enabled me to get out of my shell. Whenever I dance I feel ecstatic and it has helped me overcome stage fright. It has also helped me get out of stress and anxiety. When I started boarding school, I was quite unhappy and disturbed but dance is what took me out of that anxiety. Hence, dance is like my safe space and it allows me to feel at home.

Leadership: Started Bollywood dancing enrichment:

With a fellow student, Iman I started a Bollywood dancing enrichment to help preserve and share the dances of my culture with others. In Aga Khan Academy Mombasa there is a huge "Desi" community, one of the ways that we communicate and express our culture is through dance. To help fellow students express their culture and creativity with a fellow student I started aa Bollywood dance enrichment. We meet for one hour at-least once a week and learn different dances to help celebrate our culture and enjoy the art together.

Performing at MADD NIGHT:

Another one of my achievements from Bollywood dancing is that I got to perform with my enrichment group at MADD night (school talent night), this not only helped members of enrichment and I express & share our culture with others, but also helped us further increase our confidence. Overall it was a wonderful experience to perform and share our identity with our school.

Physical Health Education

Grade 8

During grade 8 I had the opportunity of starting Physical health education, for me this was quite a new concept as it my old school we only had Physical education and it more sports based with very limited theory. In grade 8 I learn the PHE was using theory about sports to develop skills. This was evident when in grade 8 I began coaching my client and I had to teach her how to play badminton from the basics. During the session i had to create appropriate drills that allowed my client to develop the necessary components of the sport. During grade 8 we also went online which meant I had to coach my own sessions and had to develop key self management skills.

Grade 10 : Mock E-Portfolio, and E-Portfolio:

My grade 10 physical education journey can be divided into 2 components:

1. Mock Portfolio: At the start of grade 10 we had to create a Mock E-portfolio for this I partnered with Ela Devani, Ela taught me the sport Badminton and I taught her dance. During the process we were able to understand the E-Portfolio structure and also maintain our fitness as we were engaging in a performance development plan. I was able to learn key session planning, and Badminton skills through out. I learned how to serve backhand, perform backhand, smashes, and clear shots. Finally during the process of building the Mock E-Portfolio I also understood how my criterion C video with pre-test, and post-test, as well as annotations of the skills used. During the MockE-Portfolio I was also able to receive feedback on what i needed to work on in my final E-Portfolio.

2. E-Portfolio: When we completed Mock E-Portfolio we started to create our final E-Portfolio that would be sent to the IB. For this we also chose a partner who we could be a coach and client to. I was a client to Ela Devani for Bollywood dancing, and she was a client to me for badminton. We both developed a performance development plan after identify our weakness from a video analysis of us participating in the sport and fitness tests of the components that are needed in the sport. During the Performance development plan we both edited our session based on feedback from each other, to develop each session to be more intense than the last. Lastly to test the effectiveness of our performance development plans we both re-did our original fitness tests and video analysis. This was a way we could make conclusions for the improvement we had made.

Grade 9

During grade 9 we first covered the unit dance, during this unit I was firstly able to learn more and express my culture, as I had the time to learn and practice Bollywood dancing. I was able to share my culture with a peer as well as we taught each other our cultural dances. I was also able to learn my peers cultural dance. This was a memorable experience as I got to learn another type of dance, and we overall we had lots of fun learning these dances. At the start of Semester 2 in PHE we got the opportunity to train individuals in our community to help them keep fit, for this we build sessions plans, and also created poster's to advertise our program. I created 2 programs one aimed for youth and one aimed for the elderly.Images of the program and execution are below. The  Lastly we were introduced to the E-portfolio format and were taught how we code use it to rain for a particular sport. For this unit I chose the sport cricket as it was accessible in Pakistan during online learning, and a sport I wanted to pursue again and had not gotten the time to do so yet because of other priorities. This was extremely helpful as not only did I understand more about how to structure my work and plan training session but I also got to participate in a sport which I I hadn't gotten time to train on before.
